So, DH has a prescription for an "SA"
Semen Analysis . . .
Let's share our experiences with each other.

A urologist that specializes in infertility
is the best thing in this case.
If a repeat SA shows no sperm, there may be a
congenital abnormality *OR* there could be a
blockage that can be corrected through microsurgery.
There are only a few urologists that specialize
in male infertility that also specialize in
this type of surgery. In particular,
if Lee and her DH are on the East Coast I would
recommend a consultation with either
Dr. Marc Goldstein or Dr. Petere Schlegel at
Cornell Medical Center in New York City.
(These two physicians are considered
the top surgeons in the world.)

If you are in the Mid-West,
I suggest
Dr. Sherman Silber
in St. Louis Missouri.

If you are near Houston, the "god"
of all things male factor related is

Dr. Larry Lipshultz at Baylor
.

If there's one piece of advice I had for
any couple going through severe male factor problems,
it would be don't waste time going to see
a "nearby" urologist. Go straight to
the best and save yourself (and particular
such sweet DHs) a great deal of pain and emotion.
I've seen my DH suffer at the hands of
horrible urologists because "he didn't
want to be a bother".
Horse hockey! That's the single reason
he'll be seeing Dr. Schlegel in January.

I hope this helps...

Hope for Couples with Male Morphology problems

Hi,just wanted to share some hope
with those of you whose husbands
have sperm morphology problems.

My husband and I had been TTC
for 11 months when he had a SA that
showed 94% abnormal morphology.
I didn't think it could get much worse,
but a second SA showed 100% abnormal forms.
Sperm with poor morphology have trouble
fertilizing because they have difficulty
swimming up through the CM, and also have
difficulty penetrating the egg.
My husband saw a urologist
who told him he had varicocele,
a varicose vein in the scrotum
which impairs sperm formation
due to too much heat caused by the vein.
The problem may be corrected with surgery,
however, my doctor recommended IUI
for several months before surgery for my husband.
I had IUI and today I received confirmation
on my blood test that we are pregnant.

I can't believe it's really true!
IUI can work for those with morphology problems.
Good luck to you all.
Positive thoughts to you! :)

We have morphology problems too!
10% normal shape one time then 15 % the next.
We are on schedule to try an IUI the cycle
after next (abnormal pap kept us from going ahead sooner).

You give me such hope! Thank you!!

I need help reading my DH's SA report.

Just got my DH's SA report and the Dr. says it's fine,
but then he says everything is fine sometimes
even when it's not.

What do you all think?
Why does his sperm count say 170,
I thought it was supposed to be in the millions
i.e. 20 million??

TEST NAME RESULT REFERENCE RANGE
Volume 6.0 Hi 1.5 - 5.0 ML
Liquefaction Normal Within 30 min.
Viscosity Normal
Motility 85 Greater than 50%
Sperm Count 170 Greater than 20 x 10E6/ML
Morphology 39%normal >80% normal

Thanks,
Lynn

~~~~~~~~~~
Lynn the 150 is probably 150 million
and your dh's SA looks great to me.
What about the Morphology only 39% normal?
and you think his count is 170 million???
Thanks again.
Wow he can produce those boys
the #'s look great he should be proud
~~~~~~~~~~~
If they say it is fine I'm sure it is.
One site is male infertility
There are many others too.
This should help you.
Also note that the parameters
are a little different with different readings.
I hope this helps you.

LynnM, A normal morphology is 30%
or better and some sources say 60% or better
but our SA said 30%
The SA looks great! My dh's said 98
and my dr. translated that into 98 million!
Great news.. congrats!!

My DH got his SA results back and
it said he has 0% morphology.
What does this mean?
Will we ever be able to conceive?

RESPONSE:
Ouch!!
That means that none of the sperm
were healthy or formed properly..
If it can not be resolved you
may need donor insem or IVF
if they can make a few good men.
But please get a second count in 6 weeks
and have him wear boxers and stay out of heat.
Good luck.

My Dh has had several SA tests.
He was found to have varicocele
He had surgery in Sept. 99 & his count
as of feb. 99 went up at least 3X what it was,
we are not PG yet
but I feel we will be soon now that this
is corrected.
There is hope with male factor.
